I recently hit the road from Vancouver Island’s southern coast and made my way to the charming town of Comox for a shoot that was unlike anything I’ve done before. This wasn’t just any photo session—it was a surprise proposal. When my friend Raymond reached out and asked me to capture the moment he planned to ask Charlene to marry him, I didn’t hesitate for a second. It’s always an honour to photograph people at their most vulnerable and joyful, but being trusted with such a personal, once-in-a-lifetime moment? That’s something truly special. The drive up Island was filled with excitement, nerves (the good kind). There's a kind of freedom that comes from being on the open road, solo or not, with nothing but a good playlist and anticipation guiding you forward. I found myself singing at the top of my lungs, letting the winding roads and stunning views along the ocean fill my spirit. When I arrived in Comox, I was struck by how quaint and welcoming the community felt. The Fisherman’s Wharf was the perfect backdrop—sailboats bobbing in the water, colorful buildings reflecting in the marina, and a soft ocean breeze that made everything feel a little more cinematic. It was one of those places that immediately invites you to slow down and soak in the moment.
I got into position early, camera ready, heart pounding a little. The thrill of waiting for a surprise proposal was electric. There’s this quiet tension in the air, a mix of hope and excitement, and you can feel the love building just under the surface. And then—it happened. Raymond dropped to one knee. Charlene gasped.
